"Earth and Sky"

Do I contradict myself?
Very well then....I contradict myself;
I am large....I contain multitudes.
(Walt Whitman, "Leaves of Grass")

"Earth and Sky" is a series that explores the possibility that Superman and Batman had a romantic relationship in the AU world shown by Jeph Loeb in the "Absolute Power" story arc, and the effects that would have on the canon versions of the characters.

Afterword:  The Saga of Nightwing and Flamebird [Translated and Abridged from the Kryptonian]

The stories were born from a fascination/frustration with Jeph Loeb's run in Superman/Batman, specifically the "Absolute Power" arc, in which Clark and Bruce are kidnapped at a young age by time travelers and become rulers of the world (and to the slash-sensitive, clearly bedmates). I really wanted to see more of this world, so obviously I had to do it myself.

Then I found myself wondering about the effects of that relationship on the canon versions of Batman and Superman, so I had to write that as well! So the stories tend to go back and forth between the canon and the AU.

Quirks: I tend to be rather mushy...I try to keep my canon Batman on-model but he's so fond of Clark it's difficult. I rationalize it by saying he has these alternate memories he's processing that are making him wonky. I love hurt/comfort, angst, and boatloads of UST, so if those are your likes you'll probably find something here that tickles your fancy.

Hi Jen! Just trying to do a bit of catch-up today on LJ, and say hello. (having had no Net access for nearly a week! Argghh!) (& need to pop into Yahoo Group too sometime, don't I?)

Also am wondering how your move into your new house went? Have a happy Housewarming!!! :-)

This is a great idea, collecting your stories all in one place. (and reminding me I haven't read at least one of those yet - will rectify immediately!!!) (and uh, for the LJ-Ignorant, how did you do it? Just use lj-cut for each story? And they all fit on one page posting??)

This: "I really wanted to see more of this world, so obviously I had to do it myself. "

Yeah! The definitive statment for how all fanfic is born. (grin) Yep. I know from where you come! (grin)

And I don't think you're mushy at all. I love the deep feeling you evoke in your stories for Bruce, and it's sentimental, but not mushy.

As for the AU titles - I think they're perfect for what you're doing with them, because it's funny - I keep a dream journal (sporadically) and title my dreams with very similar titles, so that I can remember them better from the images that stayed in mind. (and also 'cuz I can't really come up with brilliant dream titles EVER.) So this makes such perfect sense to me.

Off to read now ...

I'm adding this post to my memories. All the links together like this is very good for me. I'm horrible about organization.

Thank you!

Oh, thank you so much! I'm glad you're enjoying the stories. (I'm enjoying writing them!) The Loeb run on S/B was amazing--sometimes utterly insane, but amazing. Hope you can get your hands on it.

*is utterly mesmerized by your icon. Whoa*

It took me over a week and a half to read this story. I had to stop a lot, and close my eyes to it because of the pain, and the inherent beauty of it. It’s left me utterly speechless, and usually in my reviews I meta a lot about different theories I have, but this time I think you got everything so perfect there is nothing left to be said. This is a beginning, a middle, and a closure, if not really an end, because they’re going on to do greater things.

This story held so much hurt in it, so much pain, but in the end it’s just pure happiness. A greater happiness because the pain is still there, just bearable because Bruce and Clark finally have each other in their lives. All of their lives. This is the ultimate soulmates story, and yet it wasn’t corny or cliché at all. It was just them. You did so much justice to their characters, and your style read so beautifully. It was easy to read, and yet so hard to see happening. I loved every minute of it, even the painful ones.

Wow. I've just sat here for about ten minutes, unsure how exactly to respond to your feedback because it's blown me away so much. :) All I can say is "thank you," and that it means a nearly infinite amount to know that my work moved you to write this. I'm...really deeply touched and very glad and grateful you liked it. Thank you so much.

I liked it.
Aww...I can't believe it's over. From the description I thought I'd be lost and confused, but to my surprise I wasn't. The story flowed well. The characters were amazing and the words drew you in. It was a great read. :-)

PS. Can I add you?

Re: I liked it.
PS. Can I add you?

Of course, of course! *hugs* Hi! I'm glad you liked it! I'm especially pleased to hear it wasn't hard to follow, because yeah, I agree that the description looks a bit...complex, doesn't it?

I'll be continuing this version of the guys soon, by the way, so you have good timing!

Hi jen, by now, so many of my friends have recced this story, that I picked out a few chapters from your first arc, and from what I have read, your writing is amazing.
I would like to print out what you have written so far, but since I am absolutely have no knowledge about "Jeph Loeb in the "Absolute Power" story arc" or the comics in general, I would like to ask you, what would be the best way to save and print the chapters that you have so far?
its a bit confusing for me with the canon and AU labelling.
Apr. 16th, 2007 10:20 am (UTC)
Hi Ender! There's actually an ebook of "Earth & Sky" available (with art tmelange commissioned!) that has the stories in the right order--if you have Adobe Reader and can use Yousendit you can get the file here.

If that doesn't work, reading them in the order they're on the page should work--the ones marked with a month take place in the regular comic book world, the ones without a month take place in the AU. The AU stories are mostly scattered through time, so they could probably be read in any order, but they often tie into the canon ones around them.

It is kind of confusing, isn't it? >_< It's a great example of "ignorance is bliss"--I never would have tackled something so complicated if I had had more experience. :)

I' delighted you liked the ones you looked at...let me know if the ebook works for you or not or if there are any questions about chapters I can clear up--the basic idea of the "Absolute Power" arc (which isn't developed very much in the books anyway) is that three time travellers from the future stepped in and took Clark and Bruce when they were very young and raised them to take over the world. Most of the rest I've totally made up. *grin*

thank you so much!!
I was able to dl the ebook, and when I return to my company next week , will abuse the printer there and will print that entire book :)
already peeked into it, and it looks amazing and beautiful!

thanks for adding a bit more info, that already helps a lot!

now I am looking forward to read it as soon as I have the hardcopy in my hands :)

Doesn't it? (The art and the layout, I mean, I don't speak for the stories, LOL).

Do feel free to ask questions wherever I get too obscure...there are definitely places where I assume my specialized comic-book knowledge is shared by more people than it is (as well as huge areas my comic-book knowledge is entirely absent, but those don't show as much because I just don't write about those gaps!)

I finished the story and wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing and thanks for pointing me to that community. I will definitely give it a look.

Thanks so much for letting me know you liked it! It's always a thrill to know people are enjoying your stories. Do give the comm a look and see what you can find, they're great people over there.

And much icon love!

Just gotta throw my two cents in here to say... wow. This isn't a fandom I've ever even really considered reading before, but you've made me a convert. ^^"

I tip my hat to you, ma'am!

Now that's a compliment indeed! *beams* Thank you, you've made my week!

Just popping in to see what's what. I've been wanting to start reading your Nightwing and Flamebird series, but wanted to wait until it was finished. (I know, bad reader! >_<) Anyway, after I finish your Music of the Spheres series, through which I'm plugging along slowly, I'll start this one.

*noted and bookmarked*

Not bad at all! I can understand wanting to wait and make sure the author followed through before committing. :)

I hope you enjoy both MotS and this! *hugs both series and you*

This series is so awesome to the max. It's depressing, but has a happy ending so I'm satisfied.

Yeah, no deep comments, sorry. But I really want to get that Superman/Batman tradeback now. I love stories where the good guys are bad guys. 90% of the time, it makes them look sexier too. And that is an awesome bonus to the already engaging angle of character development it provides.

You rock. ^_^

It's depressing, but has a happy ending so I'm satisfied.

*grin* That's pretty much an ideal situation for me! I like to have a fair amount of stress in the middle but still find a way to make everything work out somehow.

I love stories where the good guys are bad guys. 90% of the time, it makes them look sexier too.

I had a lot of fun with the Absolute Power version of the guys! Although as I wrote more, it became easier to write them as teens than as adults, before they became really horrible. :) As teens they were just...cutely wicked. *grin*

I'm so glad you liked it!
Jan. 24th, 2009 04:40 pm (UTC)
I love this series, but it's too much emotion to go through to read often. Just have to pull it out on occasion to get the right kind of fanfic fix. *sheepish* :)
Jan. 25th, 2009 01:42 pm (UTC)
*grin* Believe it or not, I feel the same way about it. :) So I can appreciate the feeling!
