This journal (the initials of which stand for what used to be my username) will be going on hiatus for some time.  Comments to this post are screened if you'd like more information--it's nothing earthshattering, though, I promise.  No fanwank to be found.  :)
Title: Chapter Eight:  Too Bright for Our Infirm Delight
Pairing/Characters: Kal-El, Bruce Wayne, Kara Zor-El
Notes: "The House of the Earth" is an AU in which a few thousand Kryptonians escaped the destruction of Krypton to flee to Earth and enslave its people.
Rating: PG
Word Count: 2400
Summary:  Kal studies obliqueness, is given an unwelcome ultimatum, and embarks on something of a road trip.

Tell all the Truth but tell it slant—Success in Circuit lies.Collapse )

Dear Yuletide Writer!

Dear Wonderful Person:

This journal is technically on posting hiatus, but I promise I'm around.  :)  I usually write slash and so of course I have no problem with it, but I also love gen and het stories very much.

If you're looking at the Emily series--I always understood why Emily had to end up with Teddy, I did.  Dean never got her need to create, she had to leave him for her own soul's sake.  I just...wish so much she hadn't had to, because he was so fascinating and yes, sexy.  I'd love to see a story where he lives up to her.  If that doesn't work for you, though, I'd be very happy for any story--especially one featuring the aunts and uncles as well.

Thomas Covenant--again, anything is great.  Mhoram and Foamfollower are my favorite characters (um, maybe not as a pairing, lol--although if you want to try it I'd trust you!), but I loved the Bloodbrand and Elena and Hile Troy and...well, all of them.  I've read the later series (although not the latest book yet), but the first trilogy is really my favorite.  I'm very easy to please on this one.

Vampire Knight--I've been on a vampire kick recently.  I really love the sexiness of the yearning between the main characters, the temptation of it all.  I can get into any combination at all of Zero, Kaname, and Yuki.

Silmarillion--No need to write anything explicit at all if it's squicky for you, that's not what I'm after with Niniel/Turin.  They're just one of those couples that I like to imagine had some happy moment somewhere, and I'd love to see it.  That said, I could also really enjoy Beleg/Turin (contradictory as that seems with the het pairing, lol) or anything with Beren and Luthien as well.

DCU Online to aim for female players

MTV Multiplayer: Have you done anything with “The Agency” and “DC Universe Online” to try to bring more women into those games as well?

Sony Online President:: We are going out of our way in “DC” because we saw that women were really the largest part of the audience for “The Dark Knight” [movie]. In fact, I heard a stat that said it might’ve been more women than men — but I can’t back that up, it was just something I randomly heard… But we want to make games that appeal to all kinds of gamers.

(full article here, but that's all that's in it for DCUO)

All right, now I'm trying to imagine what exactly the designers of DCUO think it would be to be "female friendly." Depressing possibilities aside, I'd like to think the end results of gameplay would be something like...this:

[At close of mission to defeat Joker]

Superman: Oh, Mary Sue! You were amazingly helpful in this mission--truly the bravest and most heroic individual I have ever fought beside.
Batman: And I found you impressively brilliant and witty, Mary Sue. Rarely have I had the pleasure of meeting a person whose ninja and computer hacking skills are nearly equal to mine. Would you care to join me in the Manor later for quiet drinks and deep discussion, in which I suggest your love will heal my deep psychic wounds?

[Menu option:
--Accept [Dinner Mission] with Bruce Wayne.
--Suggest Batman introduce you to Nightwing.
--Suggest Batman ask Superman out on a date instead.]

Batman: Why, Mary Sue! Now that you mention it, Clark has truly beautiful eyes. But I'm sure he would never be interested...

[Quest received: Talk Superman into going on a date with Batman]

Superman: Oh my. I'm flustered by your suggestion, Mary Sue, but as I trust your wisdom and intuition implicitly...perhaps...

[Quest achieved: Matchmaking Superman and Batman. You have received 6,000 XP.

Okay, now I totally want to create a character named "Mary Sue."  I'm sure that'll be taken in the first five seconds of gameplay, alas...

Title: Chapter Seven:  Understanding
Pairing/Characters: Kal-El, Bruce Wayne, Lex Luthor, Selina Kyle, John Henry Irons, Lois Lane
Notes: "The House of the Earth" is an AU in which a few thousand Kryptonians escaped the destruction of Krypton to flee to Earth and enslave its people.
Rating: PG
Word Count: 2450
Summary:  Kal meets the leaders of two cells of the Metropolis resistance and makes something of an enemy and something of a friend.

You want your freedom and your moral purity too. It"s not that simple.Collapse )

Scans: Trinity 18

*cracks knuckles* All right. Here's where things get awesome.

I'm a sucker for dystopian alternate realities, so this was so much fun. Sadly, "A world with no Superman or Batman" is...not going to get a lot of fic from me. And yet, I crave fic set in this world.

Specifically, Dick/Roy shippers should be all over this AU.

To sum up a few of the main characters in this AU that don't show up later in the scans:

Wally West is the Flash, a sellout huckster like Booster Gold, opening Piggly-Wigglies.

J'onn is a detective in Colorado (John Jones) and has been secretly working as Martian Manhunter.

Dick is a mobster working for Tony Zucco--goes by "Richie Grayson" (I like "Richie" quite a bit better than "D.J.").  arch_schatten  says she remembers another Elseworld in which Dick ended up working for Zucco, but we can't remember which one--Thrillkillers, maybe?  Anyone know?

Supergirl is on the equivalent of the JLA (along with Stargirl, Geo-Force, Black Lightning, Hawkgirl, and Power Girl in a really nice new outfit), but has never heard of the term "Kryptonian."

Lois Lane is an aggressive television commentator.

Aquaman is hot like fire.

Why are people in dystopian AUs so much hotter? Is it some kind of natural law of fannish physics?Collapse )

Title: Chapter Six:  Something Deeper Than Pain
Pairing/Characters: Kal/Bruce
Notes: "The House of the Earth" is an AU in which a few thousand Kryptonians escaped the destruction of Krypton to flee to Earth and enslave its people.
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: 2900
Summary: A Kryptonian party causes problems for Kal and Bruce and things get complicated.

How blind could his fellow Kryptonians be, to not see the fierce intensity and disdain right in front of their eyes? Collapse )

SCOTUS meme!

This meme made me laugh, because when I read the news article about Palin's interview I immediately trotted to DaMo's office and said, "Hey, how many Supreme Court cases can you name and at least know a little about?"  :)  Glad I wasn't the only one.

As evidenced by Katie Couric, Sarah Palin is unable to name any Supreme Court case other than Roe v. Wade. [I have seen that vid. I don't much care to go digging for it again.]

The Rules: Post info about ONE Supreme Court decision, modern or historic to your lj. (Any decision, as long as it's not Roe v. Wade.) For those who see this on your f-list, please feel free to take the meme to your OWN lj to spread the fun!

Go forth, and edumacate!

One of my favorites and a case germane to many of us:  Miller v California.

This was the case in which the Supreme Court defined "obscenity" as material with sexual content that violates "community standards" and has no  "serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value."  The "violating community standards" clause is especially complex now in the age of the Internet, where material written in San Francisco can be easily viewed in Peoria.

The case is famous for prompting the wonderful line about obscenity uttered by a justice in a different case, Jacobellis v Ohio, as they debated what "community standards" and "without serious artistic value" actually meant:  "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it."

Title: Chapter Five:  No Sanctuary
Pairing/Characters: Kal-El, Bruce Wayne, Kara Zor-El, Zhon-Mal (J'onn J'onnz)
Notes: "The House of the Earth" is an AU in which a few thousand Kryptonians escaped the destruction of Krypton to flee to Earth and enslave its people.
Rating: PG
Word Count: 3400
Summary: Kal and Bruce go to Metropolis and have a couple of unnerving conversations.

The city was one of the very few left un-razed after the Arrival; as Kal looked down at it he could see how the Kryptonian architecture overlay the human structures. The result was an odd mix: spires and fluted buttresses with a bedrock solidity of concrete and steel.Collapse )

Songs: Alien Galaxies, Let's Go Sailing

I haven't shared any music for a while!  And am behind on everything but in the mood to post some songs, so...

Alien Galaxies, "Kryptonite Blues"
I don't have the lyrics to this one anywhere, but it's kind of jazzy and folksy, and any song about "transmuting Kryptonite vibrations" is good with me.  :)

Let's Go Sailing, "Sideways"
This is one of the songs I've been listening to a lot while writing "The House of the Earth."  It's all about being hopeful but hesitant and fits Bruce pretty well in just about any version.

I"ve been looking at you...Collapse )
